Don’t worry, I have nothing for sale here. I’ll just answer all your questions about affiliate marketing and how to start a profitable side hustle in your spare time.
This applies to you if you want to have more:
- Money.

… to enjoy the best things that life has to offer.
What is Affiliate Marketing?
Affiliate marketing is action-based marketing. Companies pay third parties (affiliates) a commission for every sale that they refer to. Every time we refer someone that buys one of their products, we’ll get paid a commission.
Affiliate marketing is the perfect side business for beginners and people with other full-time jobs. You can regard it as a brand ambassador, freelance digital marketer, or even contract employee without the commitment.
We, as the affiliate, enter an affiliate marketing agreement, but if we want to stop promoting them, we can. It’s a win-win situation. Because these companies have a set marketing budget, they just pay a fixed commission for each sale.
One important aspect of affiliate marketing is that it’s not spamming! You don’t just put up links and try to get random clicks. If you join some “make money online” Facebook groups, you’ll notice that they’re full of spam posts. This is not how you want to do your business.
Because of these types of situations, many people still believe that affiliate marketing is not a legitimate business.
Affiliate marketing is a people’s business. It’s all about trust. You need to be relatable; otherwise, no one will trust you. In the same way, why would they trust your affiliate link? And this is valid if you’re writing a blog, making YouTube videos, or using social media to get traffic to your offers.
Who is affiliate marketing for?
You may be a perfect candidate for an affiliate marketing business if you are:
- Busy with a full-time job, kids, or other obligations.
- Want to start a side hustle but don’t want to devote countless hours to your business every single day.
- Cringe at being “super salesy.” I also hate selling…
- Not quite sure how to get started or have never built a business before.
And if you failed in the past with other business models, then leveraging an established affiliate partner can be a huge help for you.
Who is affiliate marketing not for?
Affiliate marketing may not work for you if:
- You’re just going to sit back and expect to push a button on some software and have that do all the work.
- You think you’ll make a million dollars tomorrow.
- You want to spam links instead of building a real business.
- You just want to rip people off.
My whole business is built on building trust, rapport, and helping people, be it with the written word or interacting in social media.
Affiliate programs
Everybody’s familiar with Amazon. But most people don’t realize they have an affiliate program that they call Amazon Associates. You can find it just by typing “amazon affiliate program” on Google or by scrolling to the website’s footer section and clicking on “Become an Affiliate.”
Amazon is one of the largest affiliate marketing programs in the world.
And you can sign up as an affiliate and start promoting any of their products. They sell just about everything, so that gives us a lot of options.
But it’s just not Amazon. Best Buy also has an affiliate program. You can earn money partnering with trusted brands like these. Joining is free and easy.
Basically, everything has an affiliate program these days. Statistics reveal that more than 80% of brands have affiliate programs. And that’s because it is a win-win situation like I said before.

How Does Affiliate Marketing Work?
So how does affiliate marketing work?
Sales are tracked with a unique link or URL. When you sign up as an affiliate, you get a unique link assigned to you, and that’s how you refer people. These special links will contain your affiliate ID.
When someone clicks on your affiliate link, they will be tracked by third-party cookies that are stored in your browser. These cookies can have a duration of 30 days, 60 days, or even more, depending on the affiliate program you’re in.
If the person you referred makes a purchase, you get the commission.
Here’s how affiliate marketing works in 6 simple steps:
- Choose a product.
- Grab the affiliate link for that product.
- Recommend the product (blog, social media, YouTube, etc.)
- If the potential customer is interested in that product, they click on your link and go to the merchant website to check it out.
- They buy the product.
- The link attributes the sale to you, and you get paid a commission.
The best part about Amazon is they don’t need to buy the product you recommend. If they buy anything else from Amazon within the next 24 hours, you’ll still be credited for that sale.
How to get people to click on your link
There are only two ways for people to click on your links.
- Paid Ads (Facebook, YouTube, Google, etc.)
- Organic (Free — You create content on your blog or social media)
It is widely known that it takes time, months even, for your blog to rank on Google. While there are ways to increase your domain authority so Google can start moving up your rankings, it’s not an easy task for beginners who have no idea how to even start a blog.
So how do we create content that can reach a high amount of traffic?
You probably heard of TikTok.
TikTok has taken the world by storm. The cool thing about TikTok is they have a viral algorithm. If you’ve never been on TikTok before and you don’t have a TikTok account, it’s really easy to get traffic. Therefore, it’s really easy to get views on your video.
Compared to other platforms, it’s so much easier to get started as a new account.
Here’s an example of someone who is using TikTok to promote Amazon products.
He makes short videos reviewing products sold by Amazon. When you click the link in his profile, it goes over to his Amazon store. There you can see all the products that he’s reviewed on TikTok.
And guess what? All the links on his Amazon store page are affiliate links. If you go and buy any of those products, he’ll be credited for the sale.
By creating engaging videos, people click over your TikTok bio/profile. If they buy anything, you’ll get credit for the sale.
Facebook Reels is also changing the game, as they allow you to share your affiliate links in the comment section. It’s also a great way to give away free content and grow your email list.
If You Want High Income, Don’t Promote Amazon Products
Promoting Amazon products is an easy way to start doing affiliate marketing. And it makes sense because tangible products like those you can buy on Amazon are easy to understand.
However, there are a few issues when it comes to affiliate marketing on Amazon:
- When you’re promoting physical products, you need the actual products to make engaging videos or take good pictures if you’re writing a review on your blog.
- It’s hard to target an ideal customer on TikTok with those physical products.
- This strategy relies on “Going Viral,” and that’s hard to do consistently.
The ideal affiliate marketing business is to make as much money as possible with the least amount of work. Besides consistency, you need more control over your affiliate earnings. You need more control over your business and less risk.
Relying on viral videos for your income doesn’t give you much control, and it’s risky.
Also, there’s the issue of how much money you’ll make with Amazon.
Here’s Amazon’s affiliate commission payout structure.
For the first category of games, you get 20%. For luxury and beauty, you get 10%. And the majority of your commissions will come in the range of 1-5%.
Do the math.
Imagine you have a video going semi-viral, and you get 100 buyers. Let’s suppose that the average order value that someone spends on Amazon each time is $35. If you multiply that average order value times 100 buyers times the 3% commission rate, you receive $105.
Now, imagine how many viral videos you’d need to make to get a decent income!
Fortunately, there’s another way of doing affiliate marketing. That’s called high-ticket affiliate marketing.
High-Ticket Affiliate Marketing
The image below shows you the most common high-ticket commissions you can earn from promoting this particular product or working with this specific company. This is just to show you the range of what I mean about high-ticket.
The $1,000 commission is the most common, but there’s also $598 and $1,350 commissions. And each of them comes from one sale.
Here, the math makes more sense. When you’re doing high-ticket affiliate marketing right, 5 buyers a month averaging $1,000 commission for each buyer is $60,000 a year.
It’s much easier to sell 5 things than 5,000 things in a given month, don’t you agree?
The best part is that high-ticket affiliate marketing is not more complex than low-ticket affiliate marketing. You just have to choose the right programs.
And this is where some beginners have that mental block or mindset shift that they need. But there’s a reason why. We’re not just going out there and finding random strangers and saying, “Hey, do you want to buy this $5,000 product?”
That’s not how it works.
We leverage what is called a value ladder. And if you partner with an excellent high-ticket program, they’ll have a built-in value ladder for you.
The Value Ladder
This is how the value ladder works:
1. Low-ticket front-end product
We, as the affiliates, promote a low-ticket front-end offer. For example, this could be a lead magnet like a free ebook or a small front-end product that costs $20. Conversion rates will be better than promoting a $5,000 product.
Do you think people would take you seriously on social media if you’d go out there and say, “Here’s a $5,000 product that can solve your problem.” I think not. But if it’s a $10 product, they might be interested.
2. High-ticket back-end products
After the purchase has been made, the affiliate partner you’re working with will nurture your leads. After you refer them to the front-end product, you’re pretty much done. You’re on to more traffic.
The brand you partnered with will start adding value. They’ll make additional offers, more back-end products that are more expensive.
Of course, not everyone will buy these back-end products. But if you get enough people in the front-end, some of them will.
Also, the people you refer don’t need to buy the front-end product right when they see it. By becoming your leads (because your affiliate partner captured their name and email address), your affiliate partner can start nurturing them via email.
3. Recurring programs
Some brands offer continuity programs with monthly recurring revenue.
This value ladder is what will help you make those high-ticket commissions without doing any more work.
Anytime you refer someone to a low-ticket offer, that company will attribute that customer to you. So even if they buy the $5,000 product six months from now, you’ll still get credit for that commission.
The customer becomes your lead for life. And that’s how you build this business.
Value Ladder Examples
Here, I’ll give you a more visual representation of how this value ladder works.
ClickFunnels is a software that helps people build sales funnels. One of their products in their funnel is the Traffic Secrets book which shows you how to get more traffic.
This offer is called a “Free + Shipping” offer.
It’s promoted as a free book, and you just have to pay for shipping and handling. When people buy the book, you’ll earn $1. You’re not going to get rich with $1, but that customer will be attributed to you as the affiliate.
ClickFunnels will have a funnel that offers them upsells after they purchase. Upsells include:
- Audio Book for $37.
- 2 Day Event for $97.
- Box Set for $97.
- Funnelytics for $397.
If someone purchases the book and all those upsells that can help their business, you can earn up to $264.40. And this is only by referring people to that free book.
And it doesn’t stop there. That person will be attributed to you for life.
ClickFunnels will pay you commissions on anything else they purchase.
For example, imagine your referral gets the Traffic Secrets book and later realizes he needs a website for his business and wants to use ClickFunnels.
If they picked the $127/mo plan, you, as the affiliate, would be entitled to earn a 40% monthly recurring commission.
Basically, you refer someone to a free book and end up earning about $50 every month as passive income. That’s part of the value ladder.
Because ClickFunnels has several different products, they may send your referral an email about Funnel Scripts six months from now. This is a program that helps you write your sales copy.
Anyone who needs traffic or anyone who needs a website will probably be interested in this product, also. And if your referral purchases this product, you’ll earn $318.80.
Because you referred that customer six months ago, they’ll still be attributed to you. You’re earning that commission without doing any more work.
The best part is that this doesn’t work for super-experienced marketers only. It works for beginners too.
And the reason is that experienced affiliate partners help you earn more money. You just refer people to a free book or another low-ticket offer, and your affiliate partner will do all the back-end nurturing and sales.
It’s an excellent method to learn how to make money online, making this business model a perfect online business for beginners.
As you can see, beginners are earning their first high-ticket commissions.
